Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In FY2023 we published 9 articles in peer-reviewed journals (Nat Hum Behav; Roy Soc Open Sci; TISMIR; Music & Sci; Collabra Psych; J Cognit) and edited volumes (Oxford, MIT, Brill), bringing our total published outputs to 24. We also had several articles accepted (Sci Adv; Nat Comm; Oxford) and have several preprints under review, and presented research at international conferences, particularly the Int Council Trad Music in Ghana and the Int Conf Music Perception and Cognition in Tokyo. Overall we have had good success in pivoting from our initial plans to achieve high-impact research despite the challenges of the pandemic.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.

Reason

We have continued to successfully pivot from our original plans of in-person symposia and experiments to using Zoom, online experiments, and other virtual workarounds to implement our research plans despite the ongoing impact of COVID-19. We have also begun returning to in-person meetings, experiments, and travel to international conferences.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

For the 2024 financial year, we plan to finish publishing and publicizing the remaining outputs and planning follow-up grant applications.
Some of these presentations/meetings will occur at the Cultural Evolution Society conference (Sep 2024, UK) and International Council for Traditions of Music and Dance (Jan 2025, NZ). We will continue to hold meetings between the investigators/collaborators (mostly online plus in person at the conferences mentioned above).
