Research Abstract |
The research has illuminated the changing consciousness about national identity as it emerges in travel accounts at the time when Britain began to expand its maritime hegemony over the world. Seven researchers collaborated to examine different genres and types of travel narratives and discourses on ‘other’ cultures to illustrate the way in which literature reflects the destabilised sense of British identity through encounters with the cultural ‘Other.’ During the five-year research, we invited foreign scholars and hosted several international symposiums and conferences, while publishing numerous articles in journals and books. As a whole, it proved to be a successful and productive project.
