Research Abstract |
Village covenant refers to written community rules regulating fellow villagers' conducts of funeral, marriage, settlement of disputes among neighbors, and sanctions against misdemeanors, etc. It originated in China and later spread to the Korean peninsula and Vietnam. This research examined the revival of village covenants in Vietnam since the late 1980s and compared them to the village covenants existing in other parts of East Asia, particularly China and Korea. By focusing on the duality of law-based rule and rule by "village covenants", the aim of the research was to shed some light on the latest process of restoring traditional law in Asia.
