| Research Abstract |
By shedding light on animal representation in nineteenth-century writers, especially Herman Melville and Ralph Waldo Emerson, this study argues that the interest in various animals spurred by the development of natural science and the influx of Oriental culture and thoughts brought by colonial expansion could shape their ideas toward the view of compatible relationship between nature and humans. Their depictions of animals under such influences could pave a way to recent ideas of animal rights and ecology.
