Research Abstract

We tried to establish a new mouse model of human periodontal disease. The new model is based on the hypothesis that periodontal disease might be caused by commensal bacteria under certain conditions rather than by transient infection of foreign pathogens.
The method we used exposed the fetal mouse to human periodontopathic bacteria before other environmental bacteria are incorporated to the commensal bacterial flora of the new born mice.
