Research Abstract |
This research explores black domesticity in Frank J.Webb's 1857 novel The Garies and Their Friends, examining how the ideology of domesticity involved the antebellum cultural formation. Against the common postulation that domesticity connotes the middle-class white women's culture, the research demonstrates that (1) domestic ideology was shared or appropriated by men and women with the intersections of race, gender, and class ; (2) the peculiarities of cultural politics resided in local formulations of domestic ideology.
