Research Abstract |
We investigated symptoms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) other than those previously reported, its pathogenesis, and therapeutic strategies in ALS patients receiving long-term home mechanical ventilation. The symptoms included secondary disturbance related to dystaxia, disorder of the emotional/autonomic movement system,respirator-/recumbency-related complications, and other complications, involving the whole body. Detailed examination was difficult, and it was impossible to evaluate symptoms and their grade due to the patients' inability to express themselves, making treatment difficult. To maintain the communicative ability, we devised a method to detect vital signals and fine muscle activities using the sphincter, whose function has been pathologically reported to be retained.
