Outline of Annual Research Achievements

2021年度では、P型シリコンセンサーとフロントエンド集積回路 HGCROC を接続するために、新たな基板開発を仏・Grenoble LPSC と行い、センサーとHGCROC を接続し、第３号試作機を製作した。製作したモジュールを CERN SPS加速器のテストビームラインにてテストした（10-11月）。シリコンセンサーに 120 GeV ハドロンビームを照射し、応答でを測定したところ、最小電離粒子シグナルが明確に観測されていることが分かった。更に、モジュールの前面にタングステン板を複数設置し、80 GeV/c の電子ビームを照射し、電子シャワーの測定に成功した。これらの結果とPixel 検出器、ハドロンカロリメータ検出器の実験結果を合わせて、CERN EP newsletter に記事を投稿、掲載された。

2018年に我々日本グループが製作した FoCal 第２号試作機（mini-FoCal）のデータ解析を進めた。学術誌への投稿の最終段階にある。性能を評価した結果、エネルギー分解能にして約４％を達成していることが分かった（目標５％以下）。これらの結果をまとめ、学術誌に投稿する。

2021年、佐賀大学もALICE フルメンバーとして加入し、FoCal 後段の読み出し開発に参加した。長崎総合科学大学は、FoCal における読み出し回路担当となり、トリガー開発を本格的に開始した。理研と合同で放射線耐性テストに関する共同研究を実施しした。FoCal 日本グループは、筑波大、筑波技術大、理研、奈良女子大、広島大、長崎総合科学大、佐賀大の７機関、１８名となり、 FoCal 国際コラボレーションの中において、FoCal-E pad 検出器の責任機関であると同時に、読み出しシステム、トリガー開発においても中心的な位置を占めるに至った。

Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

概ね順調に進展している。特に新型p 型シリコンセンサーとHGCROC 読み出し集積回路を用いた第３号試作機に関して、テストビーム実験や実験室での基礎特性測定を通じて、この２年間で開発の目処がついた。この開発を完了させ、２０２２年に予定されているCERN でのテストビーム実験、および KEK でのテストビーム実験を行い、最終R&D は完了し、2023年に FoCal の技術デザイン書 (TDR) を策定できると考えている。

懸念事項の１つとして、新型コロナの影響による世界的な半導体不足がある。本研究はシリコンセンサーを使うことが必須であるため、影響は避けられない。ただし十分事前に発注準備を行い、必要枚数のセンサーを確保すれば、最小限の影響で問題なく研究が進められると考えられる。

２つ目の懸念は、ウクライナ情勢である。ウクライナの研究機関では、FoCal-E Pixel 検出器のフレキシブル基板の製造を行っている。ウクライナ情勢が好転しない場合は Pixel 開発を行っている別の機関、例えばベルゲン大学 (ノルウェー)などの協力により、別の機関で基板を製造し、計画を遂行する可能性がある。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

２０２２年度では、FoCal-E pad 第３試作機を引き続き製作し、製作したモジュールのビーム試験を行い、性能を評価する。まず6 月に CERN PS 加速器を用いてテストを行う。その際、複数のモジュールを同時に読み出すことができる「アグリゲータボード」を用いて読み出す。7月には、KEK PF-AR 加速器でのテストビームラインが使用できる場合、FoCal をKEKビームラインでテストを行う。9月、11月には、FoCal-E pad に加えて、pixel, FoCal-H 検出器も合わせた統合試験を CERN SPS (H8, H2) で行う。これが TDR に向けた最終テストとなる。テスト終了後、データ解析を行い、その結果を投稿論文にまとめ、投稿する。同時に TDR に掲載する資料を作成する。理研小型中性子源システム RANS を用いて、放射線耐性テストを継続して実施する。これまでの IV 特性に加えて、CV 特性の取得、素子の放射線耐性も評価する。これらの結果を投稿論文、TDR にまとめる。また専用のprobe station の開発を完了し、中性子照射前後の違い等、シリコンセンサーの基礎特性を系統的に調べ、まとめる。データ解析に向けた ALICE コンピューティングの再構築を筑波大にて行う。

令和５(2023)年度は、TDR を作成し、LHCC 委員会に提出する。５ pad layer のモジュール製作の作業工程を定め、製作を開始する（FoCal 第４試作機）。製作後は KEK PF-AR テストビームラインを用いて、各 layer の最小電離粒子シグナルを捉え、ゲインの較正を行う。令和６(2024)年度は、FoCal 第４試作機を ALICE 前方、衝突点から 7m の位置に導入する。そこで中性パイ中間子 (π0) を再構成し、その横運動量分布を測定し、最初の物理論文とする。またπ0-π0 相関測定から CGC の兆候が見られるかどうかを確かめる。これらの初期結果を、国際会議Hard Probes 2024 会議（３５０人規模、議長：中條、開催地 長崎）にて発表する。
