Outline of Final Research Achievements

19th-century French philosophy has not been explored in conventional history of ideas; accordingly, this study reexamined Villiers de L’Isle-Adam’s novel L’ Eve future to demonstrate that new prospects for research on French literary works of that era can be opened up by reexamining this field. More specifically, focusing on changes in the concept of the body that started with the meeting of philosophy and physiology, we reread L’ Eve future that was written on the basis of these changes, allowing the contemporary significance hidden inside this work to be rediscovered.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

AIに代表される新しいテクノロジーが現代社会のあり方を大きく変えようとしているなかで、本研究が扱う「19世紀フランス哲学」と「『未来のイヴ』」というふたつの歴史的対象には、私たちがいきる「いま」を再検討するためのアクチュアリティが秘められている。本研究は、フランス文学ならびにメディア史、思想史といった学術分野において専門的貢献を果たしうるだけでなく、「見落とされがちな過去の事象を精緻に観察することによって、それらが持つ現代的意義を再発見する」ことを実現している点において、この現代社会のなかで人文学が担いうる意義／価値を再考するためのケーススタディにもなっている。
