Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research project investigates contact phenomena―code-switching, lexical borrowing, and koineization―resulting from language and dialect contact in Korean diaspora communities in Tokyo and Sakhalin. Given the limited research on these phenomena among Korean diasporas, this study addresses an important gap. Data collection comprised: (a) five hours of spontaneous speech recordings for code-switching analysis from 16 individuals of Japanese, Korean, and mixed heritage in Sakhalin; (b) analysis of the pronunciations and meanings of 92 Japanese and 177 Korean loanwords from 256 Sakhalin residents; and (c) elicited word recordings to examine dialect contact and new dialect formation from 17 Koreans in Tokyo and 19 in Sakhalin. The findings support the applicability of Myers-Scotten’s (1993) Matrix Language Frame Model, Thomason’s (2001) contact-induced borrowing scale, and Trudgill’s (1986) dialect contact theory.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

ディアスポラ言語の方言変容に注目する研究が世界で進展しているが、首都圏及びサハリンにおいて朝鮮語の方言接触に関する研究は見当たらない。そのような状況を踏まえ、本研究では祖国朝鮮半島から持ち出された朝鮮語の諸方言と日本語及びロシア語が、日本やサハリンで接触した結果、どのような言語的帰結が見られたかをその過程と要因と伴に分析した。ディアスポラ言語における言語変化の普遍性や個別性の解明に迫り、社会言語学に新たな知見を提供した点に本研究の学術的意義がある。また、言語・方言接触による変容の研究のために収集したデータは、減りゆく二世の戦前・戦後の経験を含むため、激動の20世紀の記録という社会的意義もある。
