Outline of Final Research Achievements

We have established that J. F. van Overmeer Fisscher had W. H. Medhurst transcribe the Romanized version of the Dutch-Japanese dictionary “Nagasaki Haruma” (which he later presented to the Dutch monarch after his return home) during his stopover in Batavia on his return journey to the Netherlands from China. Furthermore, the Romanized versions held in Britain, the Netherlands, and France underwent modifications in notation as needed. Some of these editions even evolved into trilingual dictionaries by incorporating Chinese translations, thus serving as bilingual dictionaries for various languages, as well as learner’s dictionaries for the Japanese language. In addition, we clarified the routes through which “modern knowledge” reached Japan in the 19th century, as well as the state of Japanese language analysis in Europe during that period.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

欧州へ流布した蘭和辞書「長崎ハルマ」のローマ字本の足跡をたどることは，日本語がどのように欧州で受容され，さらには展開していったのかということに深くつながっている。ローマ字本は当時の日本語を克明に書き留めているため、流布した先々で用途に応じて改編されている（現代日本語の形成の指標ともなる資料群である）。グローバルな視点からは，蘭日対訳を通した「日本知」がオランダだけでなく、メドハーストにも受け継がれ、英語の世界へも知れ渡るようになる。また、シーボルトによる中国語訳の追加の試みから分かるように、本研究は，日本語学はもとより諸言語，さらには文化交流史をはじめとした歴史分野にも資するものである。
