Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study examines the social significance of operetta, the overwhelmingly popular form of popular entertainment in the German-speaking world in the 1920s and 1930s, from the following three perspectives. Firstly, the interaction between creator and audience in social and political satire in operetta, secondly, the cross-genre influence of operetta on theatre and film, and thirdly, the influence of transnational personnel, artistic and technical exchange within and beyond the German-speaking world. From these perspectives, a survey of extant material was conducted to elucidate the role played by operetta as a voice for the masses under the question of how operetta, full of social, political and cultural parody, functioned as satire in the turbulent interwar period.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
