Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I conducted a study comparing the writing performance of English as a foreign language (EFL) learners with their speaking performance. I focused on analyzing differences in lexical and phraseological complexity between EFL written and spoken opinion responses using classification analysis. Additionally, I investigated the characteristics of misclassified EFL written and spoken responses in terms of lexical and phraseological differences, learners' vocabulary knowledge, and raters' assessments of English language use. The findings of the study revealed that EFL written responses exhibited higher levels of lexical and phraseological complexity compared to spoken responses. Moreover, it was observed that transitioning from EFL spoken to written mode, resulting in the use of less lexical and phraseological complexity, was associated with lower levels of English vocabulary knowledge. Raters also tended to penalize such transitions in terms of English language use. On the other hand, transitioning from EFL written to spoken mode, involving the use of greater lexical and phraseological complexity, was deemed acceptable in terms of English language use. In summary, the study highlights the presence of lexical and phraseological differences and emphasizes the significance of employing higher levels of lexical and phraseological complexity in an unbiased manner across different modes of communication in EFL opinion-giving responses. This study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology in 2023.
