Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In academic year 2021-2022 I gathered and read primary and secondary sources on lay confraternities and missionary rivalry in Japan and in other missionary settings such as Philippines and Mexico. I presented some preliminary results at two online conferences and attended research meetings to discuss my approach and exchange knowledge on the topic with colleagues. I also published two translations of primary sources and a book chapter.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The main reason for delay are the restrictions on unessential travel due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Due to domestic travel restrictions, I was unable to attend conferences in Japan. Also, due to international travel restrictions I could not carry out archival research and gathering of bibliography in Maxico and the Philippines.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Research plan for Year 3: reading and analyzing sources on lay confraternities and missionary rivalry in Japan, Europe and other missionary settings, elaborating maps of confraternities' activities in specific cities, attending research meetigns to discuss final results with colleagues and collaborators, presenting research results at domestic and international academic associations and publishing research outcomes.

Causes of Carryover |
Travel expenses were not spent because of the travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This money will be used in the following year, if possible, to attend domestic and international conferences and visit archives.
