Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In academic year 2022-2023 I analyzed primary and secondary sources on lay confraternities and missionary rivalry in Japan, Mexico and the Philippines. More specifically, I focused on the rules of several Japanese lay confraternities and on documents related the concession of indulgences to the confraternities in Japan (missionary letters, papal bulls, etc.) I presented my research results at one domestic conference and two international conferences, as well as in an open lecture. I also organized research meetings with researchers based in Japan and abroad to look at the material culture related to confraternities and kirishitan popular belief, and its similarities and connections with Japanese popular religion material culture.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The main reason for delay is the result of restrictions on unessential travel due to the COVID-19 Pandemic in the first and second years.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Research plan for Year 4: reading and analyzing sources on lay confraternities and missionary rivalry in Japan, Europe, Mexico and the Philippines, elaborating maps of confraternities' activities in specific cities, attending research meetings to discuss final results with colleagues and collaborators, presenting research results at domestic and international academic associations and publishing research outcomes in the form of one article or book chapter.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The main reason for incurring amount to be used in the next fiscal year is that due to the covid-19 pandemic travel restrictions participation to conferences and archival research abroad was impossible during the first two years. On the third year, overseas travel was planned to attend two international conferences, but expenses were not spent because I had to cancel my participation to two international conferences. This money will be used in the following year to attend domestic and international conferences or visit archives abroad.
