Outline of Final Research Achievements

Based on materials produced in the Japanese-Brazilian society, this project sheds light on what I call "Immigrant Intellectuals" (cultivated Japanese immigrants involved in the production and distribution of knowledge) and elucidates various discourses about the life of Japanese immigrants to Brazil. In particular, I discuss Koichi Kishimoto's "Isolated in the South American Battlefield", who himself experienced the war and defeat in Brazi, and discuss the historical significance and importance of his work. I also discuss the young Brazilian intellectual Mário Botelho de Miranda, who visited the Empire of Japan and published his experiences in Portuguese. Through the thought and discourse activities of immigrant intellectuals, I examine the relationship between the Japanese-Brazilian society, which could be positioned in the "non-influence zone" of the Empire of Japan, Japan and the rest of the world, as well as the geopolitical importance of Latin America.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

日本・ブラジル関係を強めるために日系ブラジル社会の歴史を理解することは必要不可欠である。このプロジェクトは、今までほとんど注目されて来なかった「移民知識人」に光を当てている。そうすることにより、移民がその行為主体性（agency）を発揮し、自己の歴史の叙述に積極的に携わっている有様が見えてくる。また、大日本帝国のみならず、その「非勢力圏」であるブラジルにおいて日本語、「日本文化」、そして日本民族が如何に語られたかを究明しようとしたところは、日系ブラジル移民の研究に貢献していると共に、大日本帝国とラテンアメリカの関係史の理解にも寄与していると確信している。
