Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study examines the formation and transformation of "Israel exceptionalism" that permeates the political culture of the United States. It focuses on the development of American social movements in the 1980s, a decade of "conservative revolution." In recent years, there has been increasing scholarly attention to the historical construction of American political culture that underpins U.S.-Israel relations and the development of ideas and practices outside the framework of Israel exceptionalism. Based on this historiographical trend, this study has reconsidered the formation and transformation of American political culture characterized by Israel exceptionalism by examining the development of American social movements in three phases: 1) contact with the international community, 2) inflow and dissemination of international resources, and 3)clashes with American society.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

アメリカの対中東政策の背景に迫るとともに、アメリカ社会のイスラエル認識の多様性を解明できることに、本研究の意義はある。アメリカ―イスラエル間の良好な関係は、その存在が自明視される。だが近年、その両国関係を下支えするアメリカ政治文化の歴史的な構築過程とイスラエル例外主義の枠外にある思想や実践の展開に対する注目が高まっており、本研究はそのような学術的傾向に沿ったものとなっている。また、本研究は、アメリカの中東政策やイスラエル・パレスチナ問題への対応についてより深い洞察を可能とするという社会的意義がある。
