Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
When ZnO surface is immersed into NaCl aqueous solution, the growth orientation changed from nanorods to hexagonal platelets (simonkolleite) with composition formula Zn5(OH)8Cl2H2O. Conventionally, this is due to polarization mechanism of ZnO <001> to ZnO <110>. However, HRTEM observation revealed a lattice plane transformation of ZnO(002) to ZnO(110) in accordance with the UV irradiation time. With Zn5(OH)8Cl2H2O was still non-stoichiometric even after the pristine (110) surface in <001> direction was formed, multiple defects (O,Cl,H) effect was studied in detailed via STEM-VEELS and DFT calculations. The result showed intercalated Zn(OH)3Cl in simonkolleite structure responsible for energy transfer toward outmost ZnO surface layer, permitting the ZnO (002) to (110) plane transformation.
