2023 Fiscal Year Research-status Report

Feeding regulation in jellyfish

Research Project

Project/Area Number 20K15838
Research InstitutionTohoku University

Principal Investigator

Thoma Vladimiros  東北大学, 生命科学研究科, 助教 (90796046)

Project Period (FY) 2020-04-01 – 2025-03-31
KeywordsJellyfish
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

I have pursued the goals summarized in my previous report (Strategy for Future Research Activity). Specifically, I have: (1) Characterized the behavioral effects of satiety on the feeding behavior of the jellyfish Cladonema, as well as their temporal dynamics and tissue specificity; (2) Characterized the effects of a putative satiety peptide and carried out immunohistochemistry to determine its expression and (3) Expanded the set of candidate peptides using proteomics. Additionally, I have begun looking into the effects of satiety on other jellyfish behaviors, such as locomotion.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

While there have been technical setbacks for some experiments, there is good progress in most, and I am currently drafting a manuscript focusing on a detailed characterization of satiety in jellyfish.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

As some experiments have been concluded while others are still ongoing (with promising outcomes), I will focus my efforts towards wrapping up all experiments and the publication of the new results.

Causes of Carryover

The funds will be used for completion of ongoing experiments, experimental animal maintenance and to cover publication fees.
