Research Abstract |
We performedthe experimentaland computational studies on the auditory systemwhich provides the basis of speech perception. 1) Perception of size and shape from speech sounds: We found the size JNDs are almost the same for voiced and whispered speechand sufficiently small even for short sounds. 2) Auditory filter characteristics and perception by hearing impaired and normal hearing:We proposed a new method to measure auditory filter selectivity and compression simultaneously. Wedeveloped a signal processing techniquetosimulatehearing impairment within a unified gammachirp framework. 3) Functional MRI (fMRI) experiments:We studied the location of size processing in the auditory cortex. 4) Modeling of speech perception and signal processing:We demonstrated the gammachirp filterbank outperformsconventional mel-frequencyfilterbanksin the task of vocal tract length estimation. We also improvedthe STRAIGHT systemfor speech experiments.
