Research Abstract |
The aims of this research project are to clarify some similarities and differences in Japanese and English narrative discourses, in terms of the manner of new referent introduction and on the relation or discrepancy between the grammatical structure and the intonation structure of spoken clauses. The analyses are based on the narrative data collected through the same task. It has been made clear that both languages exhibit similar tendencies in terms of the preferred grammatical categories of new referents, but there are some differences in the manner in which new information is introduced. As for the relationship between grammatical and intonation structure, acoustic analyses are in progress with special attention to word order differences in both languages.
