Research Abstract |
First, a good reader of English picture books can understand the stories using various kinds of strategies, including not only listening to English word sounds, but also looking at the pictures, using back world knowledge and guessing ability. On the other hand, a poor reader is likely to concentrate on only the pictures, and is unable to exploit hints or employ other strategies well. Second, we investigated mother-child interaction, and found that mothers whose children's speaking ability is high exhibit three distinctive utterance features :(1) rapid response timing,(2) short utterance length, and(3) slow direct speech to their children. Consequently, the approach to reading picture books by the mothers of such children can foster the children's ability to understand picture books written in English more effectively.
