Research Abstract |
When compared to sevoflurane anesthesia, propofol anesthesia enhances insulin secretion under aerobic as well as anaerobic conditions. It is probable that adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potassium channels in beta-islet cells are involved in the different effects of sevoflurane anesthesia and propofol anesthesia on insulin secretion. Changes in both insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity during ischemia/reperfusion under propofol anesthesia are markedly different from those under sevoflurane anesthesia. During ischemia/reperfusion under propofol anesthesia, changes in insulin sensitivity seemed to be correlated with changes in plasma tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels.
