Research Abstract

REM sleep, a physiologic state responsible for dreaming, is unique to certain vertebrate species and thus might be involved in higher-order brain functions. Yet the roles of REM sleep remain elusive. Here, to overcome the problems of conventional methods to inhibit REM sleep (side-effects such as stress and rebound), I adopted a genetic approach. I established transgenic mice in which a neural-activity inhibiting gene can be induced specifically in the REM sleep center.
