Research Abstract |
This study sheds light on the actual conditions of traditional dwelling arrangement in the early years of the Meiji era as well as its modernization, which has not been sufficiently studied before. To this end, I made full use of the newly-discovered Inoue Heibei-ke monjo, the old documents stored and inherited in Inoue family. This study also discusses the rental housing from social viewpoints, considering management, maintenance, residents and community structures, to reveal urban-society dwelling arrangement of the period. This study also facilitated systematic organization of the Inoue Heibei-ke monjo documents, which is quite meaningful because such organization allows sharing of valuable research materials among researchers from different disciplines, not only from the architectural and housing histories, but also from the general and economic histories.
