Outline of Final Research Achievements

As a summary of the overall research findings of the project, Hirokatsu Namba (ed.) (2024) was able to publish 'Children's Reading Comprehension in the Digital Age: Insights from a Comparative Reading Study of Print and Digital' with Bungaku Tsushin along with co-researchers. As demonstrated in this book, the project's findings revealed that there was no significant difference in reading comprehension between print and digital formats among the same children, and that children with a strong digital preference had lower reading comprehension across all media in all elementary schools.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本科研の結果を受け、今後は、紙ベースの読むこと教育の「教育計画」を検討し、紙とデジタルという両方のメディアを含みこんだ、読むことの教育のための「総合的な教育計画」を考えていく必要があるだろう。その際、紙だけの段階から紙とデジタル併用への段階へと以降することや同じテキストを紙とデジタルで読み比べていく活動なども考慮に入れられるべきだろう。この「教育計画」策定においては、学校だけにとどまるものであってはならない。今回の調査では、読解点数に影響を与えていくつもの要因があり、家庭や社会も含みこんだ、「新たな読むことの教育計画」策定が必要であることを示した。
