Outline of Final Research Achievements

By comparing and contrasting the Kurokawa Harumura's Hurumonogatari Rujisyo, one of several monogatari catalogues compiled in the late modern period, with monogatari research conducted before and after Harumura, we investigated (1) the actual state of ChuseiOchoMonogatari research in the late modern period and (2) the succession and development of (1) into national literature research in the Meiji period. In addition, in the course of carrying out the research project, we discovered materials related to Kumogakure Rokujo and Iwashimizu Monogatari that had not yet been introduced to the academic world, and analysed the specific aspects of their enjoyment in the early modern period.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

中世王朝物語は、近年の文学研究において注目を集めているジャンルのひとつである。しかし、これらの物語がどのように読まれ、研究されてきたのかは、十分に解明されていない。これに対し本研究は、江戸時代後期の学者・黒川春村が執筆した研究書を軸として、江戸時代から明治時代にかけての中世王朝物語研究の実態を明らかにした。同じ物語であっても、時代・社会背景の違いにより、研究の目的は異なる。物語研究の差異を分析することにより、江戸と明治の社会的相違点に迫りうるのである。
