Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of expressions related to the other world by classifying major legends by ocean, with the Urashima Legend as the main axis of the study. The oldest record of the Urashima Legend is said to be the one set in the Sea of Japan.
To accomplish this task, I conducted a survey of the Itoi Bunko, a cultural property designated by Maizuru City, Kyoto Prefecture, where materials related to the legend of Urashima are concentrated and stored.
The linguistic expressions and illustrations reveal the festive nature of the festival, including longevity and the New Year, Kabuki, puns, laughter, and fusion with other legends.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

海洋に関する伝説という視点から、本務校の学生たちや一般のかたがたを対象としたパネルディスカッションを開催することができた。その際、国内外に拠点を持つ研究者を招聘し、その後も会合を設けて伝説への理解のための対話を行うことができた。また、伝説享受の経路の手がかりとして、心理学研究者の助力を得ることができた点は、日本文学の研究方法としては前例がなく、挑戦とともに有意義な体験となった。浦島伝説に関する研究としては画期的であったと考える。併せて、京都府舞鶴市指定文化財である糸井文庫のデータベースを微力ながら発展させることができた。
