Outline of Final Research Achievements

Through the translation and commentary of Gido Shushin's collection of poems, Kukashu, I was able to clarify the background of the Zen monk with whom Gido interacted, his relationship with Gido, and so on. I was also able to read and understand Gido's state of mind and surroundings when he went to the Kanto region.I also pursued Gido Shushin's view of literature, which was that he spent his entire life working on a selection of chants.“Shinsenjowashu” he edited at a young age and “Jukanjowashu” he completed near his death were taken up, and the bibliography of both books and the relationship between them were investigated.As a result, differences were observed in the diversification of classifications, the increase in the number of eight-line poems, and the increase in the number of chants composed in Japan.This is thought to be an educational consideration for young monks.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

これまで義堂周信は、禅林における一般的詩文の習得を推進し、宗旨重視の風潮を緩和した人物として評されてきた。しかし、実際には宗旨を含んだ偈頌を重視し、その総集を編纂することに生涯をかけていた。また、自身が詠んだ詩文についても、表面上は一般的詩文と変わらないが、精査すると宗旨的要素を含んでいる場合が多いことが分かった。以上のことから、従来の義堂像を新たに構築し直す必要があると言えよう。そのためには、『空華集』を引き続き丁寧に読解していくしかないと思われる。
