Outline of Final Research Achievements |
A study was conducted on black bears (hereafter referred to as “bears”) in the Nourthen Kinki region population for elucidating the effects of forest vegetation decline caused by Japanese deer on the bears' use of food resources.A total of 280 samples of bear fecal material were collected by field survey during the period 2021-2023. The collected samples were analyzed for contents and their composition. The results showed that, compared to other local populations, bears in the study area were less dependent on phytotrophs present in the forest, especially dwarf bamboo. In addition, they were found to be highly dependent on bamboo shoots and Japanese persimmon, which are present near human settlements. Furthermore, the fall diet was less dependent on hard nuts and more dependent on fleshy fruits.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
