Outline of Final Research Achievements

We sought to establish a method for measuring fatty acid content in skeletal muscle using noninvasive MR spectroscopy and to establish a nutritional therapy to prevent sarcopenia in heart failure patients. We established a method to identify sarcopenia more sensitively than cross-sectional area of skeletal muscle by first quantifying lipids by peak values in MR spectroscopy, unsaturated fatty acids were found to be a therapeutic target for sarcopenia. These results may contribute to a new nutritional therapy for sarcopenia, especially in heart failure patients with increased skeletal muscle catabolism.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

サルコペニアの治療標的として不飽和脂肪酸が治療標的の一つであることが明らかとなった。このようにMRスペクトロスコピーを用いた解析により、不飽和脂肪酸がサルコペニアの治療標的であることが明らかとなった。これらの成果は、今後サルコペニア特に骨格筋の異化が増強している心不全患者における新たな栄養療法に寄与すると思われる。
