Outline of Final Research Achievements

The stories of Tamamonomae appeared in Muromachi period, and their contents kept on developing and presented different literary styles after Edo period. This study tries to address two questions: First, how did the Tamamonomae stories gradually evolved and changed in Edo period? Second, what impact and influence of Chinese literature were posed on the development of these stories?
To be specific, this study dedicates to the literary interpretation of “Ehonsangokuyohuden”(the masterpiece of Tamamonomae stories in Edo period) and the analysis of how Ranshan Takai (the writer) adapted the story contents based on previous fox tales. Meanwhile, this study shows concern on the content of “two people in one body shape” in the literary works “Ehontamamobanashi” and “Ehonsangokuyohuden”, and tries to analyze how it was integrated into these works, from a broader perspective of “Tamamonomae story groups” and with reference to other literary and artistic pieces at that time.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
