Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
My goal for 2021 fiscal year was to get as much data as possible by visiting Japanese archives and libraries. However there have been difficulties in visiting certain archives due to COVID-19 pandemic situation. Some archives I could visit in Japan did not have the materials I was hoping to find. But I could access online foreign archives where I managed to collect good information which is helping me to continue my data collection. Currently I am busy examining thousands of data files in foreign online archives and downloading materials connected to my research.
Another good achievement for my research was finding about 10 descendents of the Armenians refugees who fled to the US through Japan. As a result of this I could gather valuable documents and materials which cannot be found in any public or institutional archives. Many research materials and documents connected to Armenian refugees (1915-1930) are still being kept in family archives and finding the descendants of some refugees can be considered as a very good achievement. I am currently busy analysing the data.
On July 9・10 I will be presenting my research plan and my achievements to the Japan Society of International Cultural Studies. During that time I hope I can exchange different ideas with the research community and more doors will open to find more data for my research.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I would chose "slightly delayed" as I haven't visited certain archives in Japan yet, and I need to plan my trips abroad to visit foreign archives, but I've chosen "Progressing rather smoothly", as I have some good data I can work with and even right a research note based on.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For 2022 fiscal year: 1. to write a research note about the some Armenian refugees who passed through Japan by analysing the new data I received from their descendants. 2. To collect as much data as possible from foreign archives.

Causes of Carryover |
Collecting historical data in the USA (The National Archives, Washington D.C.; American Red Cross Archives, Boston; the Near East Relief Committee Records, New York), 3) Canada (Library and Archives Canada, Ottawa). For traveling to these places I will need the following: Japan - the USA, transport in the US, accommodation in the USA 6 weeks, US - Canada- Japan, Accommodation in Ottawa 2 weeks
