Outline of Final Research Achievements

There were three points of purposes of the study on The Foundation 20th Century Research Institute, NIJISSEIKI KENKYUJYO in Japanese. The first about the organization system, a financial plan, and a business plan. We analyzed a historic document of National Archives and a new document and got more-better-than knowledge. The second is to clarify an activity or the achievements of the member of the research institute. At first, as for the member, 60 people were confirmed, but we discovered a new member and became 72 people in total. We analyzed the document about them and got more-better-than knowledge. The third is to clarify the characteristic of the research institute. In addition to the testimony of the person concerned, I got more-better-than knowledge to some extent because the analysis of the objective document advanced.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

これまで一部の関係者の述懐に資料を依存してきた状況のなか，ある程度，客観的な史資料の蓄積を大幅に進捗できたことが最大の成果である。これら史資料の分析により研究所の体制や事業計画等が明らかになったことに加え，設立者がアメリカのシンクタンク「20世紀財団」に範を求めていたことや20世紀の世界と日本という長期的な視野での活動を企図していたことも明らかにできた。関係した戦後知識人も従来，知られてきた以上に思想的な広がりがあったことがわかり，短命で寄せ集め的といった従来の印象を大幅に更新できた。本研究課題によりわが国の戦後史，とくに終戦直後の知識人活動史の一端に二十世紀研究所を位置づけることができた。
