Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Data collection from Brazil, Peru, and Colombia has been completed. Data from Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam is currently being collected. Types of data being prioritized include news articles and public procurement. Additionally, the methodology for measurement of individual attitudes and behavior has been developed, and collection is expected to start during the first semester of FY2023. These results advance the planned activities for FY2021 and FY2022.
Socialization of the research topic has been ongoing since January 2022. Monthly online roundtables on the topic of measuring corruption are being organized, with expert guest presentations and attendance of international scholars. 17 roundtable sessions have been organized. These results advance the planned activities for FY2022 and FY2023.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
Activities during FY2021 had to be delayed because the COVID pandemic made it difficult to find researchers available for collaboration in target countries. In particular, tasks related to satellite images had to be postponed until February 2022, delaying data collection.
Additionally, new challenges were encountered in relation to the collection of public procurement data and the analysis of news data from Thailand. As a consequence, survey activities have also been postponed until the middle of FY2023. However, as socialization activities have been already initiated, it is expected that the issues mentioned above will cause only limited changes to the schedule in the future. All data is expected to be succesfully analyzed by the end of FY2023.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During FY2023, work will focus on finalizing data collection and continous socialization in online roundtables and international conferences. All data analysis will be completed by the end of FY2023. However, the end of the project is likely to be delayed until FY2024, with the additional time being used for the socialization of research results via a dedicated online platform, international conferences, and peer-reviewed publications.
|
Causes of Carryover |
During FY2021, the COVID pandemic created problems for the hiring of research assistants specialized in the use of geographic information and automatic text classification systems. Additionally, several obstacles in the implementation of research methods were found. This problem forced the project to postpone or repeat related tasks, such as data collection and hiring of research assistants. These activities are scheduled to be finished during FY2023, requiring the availability of funds budgeted for that purpose.
