Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research aims to clarify the reasons behind the rise in companion animal graves, or pet cemeteries(facilities for the burial and storage of the cremains of companion animals).
The key findings of the study are as follows: (1) Until the 2000s, pet cemeteries, unlike their human counterparts, did not have adequate regulation for their development and management, which explains the increase in their number. (2) The proliferation of mobile pet crematories has led to a decrease in their establishment and operational costs, facilitating the entry of new pet cemetery managers into the market.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は、伴侶動物の「家族化」という社会現象を相対化した点で学術的意義を有している。主要な先行研究では、伴侶動物の「家族化」と相互作用しつつ動物霊園が隆盛し、増加したと理解してきた。しかし、本研究を通して、動物霊園が成立し、増加した背景には、法規制の緩さや移動火葬車の普及が関わっており、伴侶動物の「家族化」だけでは説明しきれないことが明らかになった。こうした事実を解明したことは、今後に伴侶動物の「家族化」をはじめとした動物と社会のかかわり合いを市場や産業の変化から捉える可能性を開く示唆をもつ点で、学術的意義を有する。
