Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the first six months of the project, the principal investigator worked in coordination with the counterpart researchers in Turkey and the researchers in Japan. In the original work plan, we foresaw desk study, data collection, and discussion on the conceptual framework during the first six months. These targets have been achieved. The principal investigator has worked in collaboration with the corresponding team in Turkey and discussed related issues about the status and recent developments regarding the refugees in Turkey. We also discussed how to approach the policymakers and the relevant organizations for the fieldwork. The principal investigator and the Japanese researchers also exchanged ideas about the related literature on social capital, immigrants and refugees. We also discussed about how to prepare for the survey research. Overall, the main research achievement of the first six months of the project was the preparations for the conceptual and empirical framework of the project. We have collected academic papers and policy briefs as well as reports by various organizations regarding the refugees and policies in Turkey. We have especially collected information from the official reports of the government (in Turkish language) about the refugees and the recent developments and changes in the government’s policies towards refugees. These will serve as background sources for our upcoming fieldwork.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
In the original work plan, we have listed the tasks for the first six months of the project as follows: data collection and discussion on conceptual/empirical framework. These tasks have been accomplished and the project is continuing as planned. There is only one task which has not been accomplished. During the first six-month period of the project, the principal investigator planned to visit Turkey to meet up with Turkish researchers and the relevant authorities. However, due to travel restrictions regarding the prevention of the spread of the Corona virus, it was not possible to travel. Therefore, the research budget for the first six months remained untouched. The restrictions are abolished now and research travels are planned to take place during second year of the project. We have noted in the application form that there may be changes in the work plan and the schedule based on the situation regarding the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the second year of the project (7th~18th month), the principal investigator (PI) is planning to visit Turkey for research. In this trip, meetings with the relevant institutions and a research company will be arranged. The survey study will be conducted with the cooperation of a research company in Turkey. We also plan to hold focus group meetings with the participation of Turkish counterparts. The most important task is the preparation of survey questionnaire and pilot study. PI and the researchers in Japan will cooperate to prepare the questionnaire. We are also planning to hold online meetings with the Turkish counterparts while preparing the questionnaire. During PI’s research trip, details about the survey will be discussed with the research company. These details include (1) questions in the survey, (2) pilot study, (3) training of the survey staff, (4) translation of the survey questionnaire (English, Turkish, Arabic), and (5) employing Arabic-Turkish-English interpreters, and (6) other technical details (for instance, sensitivity of the survey questions, any corrections in the language of the survey, other necessary technical procedures necessary before and during the fieldwork). We are planning to start the survey as soon as the preparations are completed. Before the survey, we will also notify and obtain necessary permissions from the official authorities in Turkey.

Causes of Carryover |
We planned an overseas research trip by the principal investigator about this was not possible due to Covid-19 restrictions. This research trip will be realized during the second year. Similarly, the research budgets for the researchers were not utilized as to trips were made during the project period. These trips will be realized and the allocated funds will be used in the second year of the project.
