| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The project team in Japan also held regular online meetings to discuss joint research and met in person in Tokyo twice. The project team in Japan and the Turkish counterpart researchers also held online meetings to discuss joint research.
The PI and one researcher conducted a two-week research trip to Istanbul, Ankara, Gaziantep, and Kilis in Turkey in collaboration with the Turkish counterpart researchers. We visited Syrian refugee neighborhoods, interviewed refugees, and gathered data. We also met with NGOs and government organizations engaging in activities related to Syrian refugees (Turkish Red Crescent, ILO, Omran, JICA, Kizilay Community Center). We also met Turkish researchers from different universities to exchange ideas for our research. We also visited a research company for help regarding the survey.
After the research trip, we decided to reorient our research based on the data and information we have obtained from the field. Accordingly, we decided to revise the survey questionnaire. We finalized the survey questionnaire after discussing it with the Japan and Turkey project teams. We decided to conduct our national survey in Turkey in fiscal year 2024 because the research companies we approached informed us that they were preoccupied with the national elections due at the end of March 2024. We plan to first obtain the ethical review board approval for the survey and conduct the national survey soon after negotiating with the research companies.
Our research was also presented at an international conference in Germany and received positive feedback.

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
We have discussed the conceptual and analytical framework and research ideas during the year. After collecting data during the research trip to Turkey, we have carefully reconsidered our research and decided to reorganize the survey and the questionnaire forms. We foresaw in the original work plan to finish the survey by the beginning of the final fiscal year. However, due to these changes, we fell a little behind schedule. We have finished working on the survey questionnaires and approached three research companies in Turkey at the same time. We have received suggestions about survey analysis from these companies. By the end of this fiscal year, we are ready to conduct the survey. Based on the advice from the research companies, we are planning to conduct the survey after the summer because many refugees are out for seasonal agricultural work. The conceptual and empirical aspects (e.g., design of empirical analysis) of our interdisciplinary research are maintained as in our original research plan.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In fiscal year 2024, we plan to conduct the survey with the collaboration of our Turkish counterpart and a research company. We will first apply for ethical review approval as some questions in the survey questionnaire are about personal information that requires such approval. After obtaining this approval, we will ask for price quotes from research companies and sign an agreement with an appropriate one. We will first ask for a pilot survey and then proceed to the national survey in the predetermined regions in Turkey which we will decide with the research company. After collecting the data from the survey, we are planning to organize our data and start writing research papers. We have already several research ideas. After collecting the data, we are planning to analyze the data and present our research findings in seminars and academic meetings as well. It is also among our plans to invite a Turkish counterpart researcher to Japan for discussion and visit several organizations and NGOs in Japan related to our research for the exchange of ideas.

| Causes of Carryover |
We plan to conduct the national survey during the next fiscal year. The research budget will mainly be used for the national survey. We are also planning to invite a collaborating Turkish counterpart researcher to Japan during the second half of Fiscal Year 2024. To attend seminars and academic meetings, the budgets of the project members will also be used if need be.
