Outline of Annual Research Achievements

<< Sources, sinks and concentration of GHGs and ODSs in the troposphere and stratosphere >>
We have developed inverse modeling systems for simulating concentrations of several greenhouse gases (GHGs) and ozone depleting substances in the atmosphere. The emissions are taken from bottom-up emission inventories or prepared from the national statistics of industrial activities and loss is modeled online in the JAMSTEC’s ACTM (the CCSR/NIES/FRCGC ACGM-based Chemistry Transport Model). The hydroxyl (OH) radicals plays the most important role in loss of all hydrogen containing compounds, e.g., CH4, HCFCs, HFCs. We first estimated the relative concentration of OH in the northern and southern hemisphere (Patra et al., Nature, 2014), and inverse modeling of regional sources is done for the HFC-134a and HCHC-22 (Xiang et al., PNAS, 2014), and CH4. We are also continuing to analysis the sources and sinks of CO2 and CH4 in comparison with other major modeling groups in the world as a part of the Asian greenhouse gases synthesis.
A data analysis system has been developed through contract with Kokusai Kyogo (Dr. Ryu Saito), and three external researchers have been invited from Europe (Dr. Guillaume Monteil, Prof. Maarten Krol, Dr. Rona Thomson) in order to improve research collaboration and joint analysis of measurements and modeling results. Overall, we have completed development of multi-tracer modeling capability in ACTM, and primary sources and sinks of the two most important greenhouse gases (CO2 and CH4) have been estimated using inverse modeling of atmospheric observations.
