Research Abstract |
The most interesting characteristic of the Western Pure Land scene on the south wall of Cave No. 220 is that it is made into a kind of stage setting. Though divided from the Pure Land by the handrails, the viewers of the painting are made to feel as if they had been invited into the theater. But all these details of the painting will not make the worshippers feel as if the Pure Land manifests itself; rather they can view it up close, which is quite different from the very early caves of the Early Tang period. The pursuit in this cave, signifies the preference of realistic representation.
