Research Abstract |
I conducted a survey and collected modern Japanese literarytexts containing depictions of Thailand, dating from the Meiji period, when closerrelationships were formed between Japan and Thailand, up to the present day. Using thiscollection as a textual corpus, I compared it with contemporary materials such asJapanese-language magazines published in Thailand that indicated the historicalrelationship between the two countries. This clarified the processes by which culturalrepresentations of Thailand have been constructed. Finally, I carried out arepresentational analysis of depictions of Thailand in modern Japanese literature byanalyzing texts by authors such as Yukio Mishima and Haruki Murakami.
