| Research Abstract |
The first aim of this research project was to collect various forms of data from the construction industry, including interviews, documents and most importantly recordings of spoken interactions between professional engineers in international settings. These different sources of data could then be combined into a corpus of international construction communication. Over the three year period, data has in fact been collected from Asian and European locations, from both the design stage of the construction process and the construction phase of the construction process. The data is from both small, local projects and large international projects involving many participants from different organisations. Some key findings concerned the use of non verbal communication on UK and international construction sites, and the discursive realization of conflict in international design meetings. A second aim was to publish findings based on this research in academic publications. This has been achieved. For instance, one paper on language in the construction industry won a prize for best article of 2011 in the prestigious Journal of English for Specific Purposes.A third aim of the research was to communicate the findings to postgraduate students at Tokyo University, and to professionals in the field. Once again, these aims have been fulfilled, through lectures in the department of civil engineering, workshops withprofessionals, and articles in professional magazines.
