Research Abstract |
This research deals with the unique geminate sounds and the system of wind-direction words in Japanese dialects. Concerning the geminates, this research (1) illustrates the correspondence between the Antoh dialect and Standard Japanese (2) investigates the historical development of these geminates, and (3) points out that the manifestation of the geminates in the Antoh dialect is similar to that in the Miyako dialect in the Ryukuan Language On the wind-direction words used by fishermen in Hokuriku district, the principle and the function of the words are precisely described by introducing a concept of “wind-shift” and the unique embodied sense of wind orientation fishermen have.
