Research Abstract |
I have looked at vocatives in trial texts in the Socio-Pragmatic Corpus, analysed what kind of vocative forms are used and how they influence the illocutionary force in utterances. By comparing the vocatives used in trial texts with those used in drama texts, I have found that the vocative usage in trial texts is more restricted than the usage in ordinary speech found in drama texts. I have also co-edited a book which collects research papers on historical pragmatic. This is a collaborative work by researchers who deal with not only English but also Japanese and German.
