Research Abstract |
The aim of this project has been to investigate the history of South Asian (mainly Indian) immigrants communities in the multi-ethnic city of Leicester from the end of the Second World War onwards, focussing primarily on the issue of religion (Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, etc). My particular emphasis has been on the diversities and prejudices which exist within each religion, and their relationship to the process of multi-faith integration in Leicester, which has taken place in the context of more general multicultural policies applied across Britain as a whole. During the course of my studies, I have conducted interviews with a number of individuals and have produced five publications in English as part of the ‘Memory and Narrative’series published by theResearch Centre for the History of Religious and Cultural Diversity at Meiji University.
