Research Abstract |
In Nepal, Dalits (‘untouchables’) are the lowest social group in the Hindu caste system. As well as enduring common cultural and social discriminations, Dalit women are further disadvantaged simply by their gender?all told these barriers often deny them access to basic services at all levels. In such circumstances, the poor women of Nepal have started activities utilizing a small amount financial system called microfinance (MF). MF programs have created social capital and empowerment for Dalit women’s groups: building awareness and capacities, allowing participation in community work, andpermitting a level of decision making among these women which did not previously exist.
