Research Abstract

To aim to develop a less cardio-respiratory depression and environmentally-friendly anesthetic protocol, we investigated a total intravenous anesthesia using a drug combination of medetomidine, lidocaine, butorphanol and propofol (MLBP-TIVA) in horses. MLBP-TIVA provided effective general anesthesia and good recovery in horses while preserving cardiovascular function. In addition, MLBP-TIVA is a multi-purpose anesthetic protocol that can be used for field anesthesia and prolonged anesthesia.
