Research Abstract

This research project is a basic study on the exhibition practices of movie theaters in Japan during the silent film era. Its purpose is to understand some features that are unique to the development of Japanese cinema, and utilizes the method of digital humanities, such as the database of flyers of movie theaters. This research sheds light on the difference in film exhibition practices of Tokyo and Kyoto during the silent film era by drawing a parallel with the difference in the relationship between the kabuki and shinpa-geki (new school) of theaters. The results of research were made available by publishing books and presentations at international conferences.
