Research Abstract |
The aim of this study is to describe the historical developments of phrasal verbs used in the Modern English period and to explain them in terms of a Usage-Based Model approach to grammar, which is standardly assumed in Cognitive Linguistics. First, I classified phrasal verbs into three types according to the semantic relationships between the verbs and particles(or adverbs), Second, the historical developments of these types were examined based on the data retrieved from electric corpora. Finally, this study showed that these developments from a perspective of"frequency effects,"which are proposed in the Usage-Based Model.
