Research Abstract |
We have successfully identified three avirulence effectors AVR-Pia, AVR-Pii, AVR-Pik and a pathogenicity protein MC69 from the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae. In addition, a rice blast resistance (R) gene Pia has been isolated. We have then found out that MC69 is a secreted protein and required for infection by monocot and dicot fungal pathogens, M. oryzae and cucumber anthracnose fungus Colletotrichum orbiculare, respectively. We also revealed that an R protein Pik1 recognizes AVR-Pik through direct protein-protein interaction. Furthermore, another R gene Pii has been successfully isolated.
